Mercedes-Benz A-Class Gets a Nip and Tuck: debut at the Leipzig auto show

STUTTGART, Germany — Highlights of the redesign of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, which will debut in April at the Leipzig auto show, include a start/stop function on certain models, an upgraded interior and high-tech features such as adaptive brake lights.

The A-Class, which is not sold in the U.S., also gets an exterior freshening that includes a redesigned grille and front bumper, which now features a larger air intake. The German automaker said the intention was to make the Euro compact look “younger.” The entry-level model gets 15-inch wheels with seven-spoke trim, while the uplevel models get 16-inch light-alloy wheels.

The cabin gets such upgrades as better seat fabrics and door trim, a larger stowage compartment in the center console and a “new-look cupholder between the front seats.”

The A-Class steps up its game when it comes to conserving fuel via a new start/stop function for high-volume A 150 and A 170 models starting in the fall. This function automatically switches off the engine when idling and saves gas, especially in stop-and-go city driving. The automaker notes that in the fall, it will supply a BlueEfficiency package for the three-door A 160 CDI with manual transmission.

The A-Class also gets adaptive brake lights, which are triggered during high-speed emergency braking. They flash to warn drivers traveling behind the vehicle. The A-Class also gets the optional active parking assistant. “Using newly developed ultrasonic sensors on the sides, the system looks for an appropriate spot on either side of the road as the A-Class drives by and informs the driver via a display in the instrument cluster,” said Mercedes-Benz. “Once a suitable spot has been found, an arrow also appears in the display, informing the driver on which side of the road the parking spot is located.”

What this means to you: If only that parking assistant would then fight the other drivers for the space you wanted…. Now that would be an innovation.
