Hummer to equip all vehicles with E85 fuel capability: Dealer sells biofuel

Hummer plans to equip all vehicles with E85 fuel capability by 2010.

Hummer’s first production E85 models will be the 2009 H2 pickup and H2 SUT, a Hummer spokesman said today.

Hummer made the announcement during the grand opening of a Dallas area dealership’s E85 ethanol station. Classic Chevrolet-Hummer is the first dealer-owned E85 station selling to the public.

General Motors plans to offer more than 15 FlexFuel models for the 2009 model year. Hummer has committed to offering biofuel capability on all its vehicles by 2010.

Classic Chevrolet-Hummer in Grapevine, Texas, spent more than $500,000 to install nine pumps dedicated to E85, E10 and biodiesel, according to a GM statement. The station is called Classic Clean Fuels and is next to the dealership’s Hummer store.

Less than 1 percent of filling stations nationwide offer E85. GM wants to make Classic Clean Fuels the catalyst for other dealerships or alternative locations to sell biofuels.

” There’s no telling where this might lead,” said Larry Burns, GM vice president of r&d and strategic planning.

” Down the road we may even want to consider hydrogen dispensers at dealerships,” Burns added.

Classic Chevrolet-Hummer sells a lot of trucks capable of running on E85, said Charles Martin, general manager, in a statement. Martin said he realized a station selling biofuels to the public was needed, and that’s why he built it.

E85 is mainly made from corn. It consists of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. It often burns cleaner than 100 percent gasoline.
