January 17, 2009 News from DETROIT Auto Show 2009 — Thousands of people are crowding into Detroit’s Cobo Center for the public opening of the 2009 North American International Auto Show.

The doors opened Saturday morning after almost a week of special access for the media, industry insiders and others.

About 700 vehicles are on display, including nearly 50 unveiled at the Detroit show. About 50 exhibitors, including automakers and suppliers, are displaying their wares.

Advanced, high-mileage vehicles including hybrids and battery-electric models are prominently displayed throughout the hall.

Despite the national recession, organizers expect nearly 700,000 people to visit this year’s show, which runs through Jan. 25.
